Under the Skin
A Journey Into the Underground World of Traditional Japanese Tattooing
DVD
by Mario Barth
Mario Barth takes you inside The Horitoshi Family, masters of the ancient art of Tebori. Although it is a traditional Japanese tattoo technique that dates back centuries, Tebori has been outlawed by the Japanese government due to its strong association with the criminal underworld. For the first time ever, the small and secret society of the Horitoshi family is documented along with their rich culture, exotic land, and the history and mythology of Japanese tattooing.
While in Tokyo, Barth participates in underground festivals, rituals, and even gets tattooed on camera. Barth has gained much respect from the Horitoshi family throughout his career and is the only Westerner to be welcomed to immerse himself into this highly-guarded world, which, until now, the average person had little knowledge of and zero access to. It is only because of Barth's accomplishments and stellar reputation that the viewer is given access to this veiled community.
